How to know you're in ketosis: 5 signs.
A few days into keto and you're wondering: is it working? Has my body switched yet? You don't need to buy a ketone meter to know. Five signals together give you a reliable answer, free and immediate.
First: what is ketosis?
Ketosis is the state where your body burns fat as its main fuel instead of sugar. Your liver produces ketones (mainly beta-hydroxybutyrate), which become the energy source for your brain and muscles.
That switch takes 2 to 4 days for most people on a strict keto diet (under 20 to 30 grams of net carbs per day).
Five signs you're in ketosis
1. Steady energy without crashes
No afternoon slump at 3 PM. No sudden energy crash at 11 AM. If you eat a meal and you still feel the same energy 4 to 6 hours later, you're burning fat, not sugar. For most people this is the most noticeable signal.
2. Hunger fades
Running on sugar, you eat every 2 to 3 hours. Running on fat, you can go 5 to 6 hours without eating and barely notice. Many people find breakfast suddenly becomes optional: they're simply not hungry. Not because they have "willpower", but because their body is tapping its own fat stores.
3. Keto breath (the most notorious one)
A light, fruity or acetone-like smell on your breath. It happens because your body releases acetone (a type of ketone) through your lungs. This is THE classic sign of ketosis. Unpleasant but temporary: usually 1 to 3 weeks. Goes away on its own as your body becomes more efficient at burning fat. In the meantime: brush teeth, sugar-free gum, and lots of water help.
4. Better focus and clearer thinking
Ketones are a cleaner fuel for your brain than glucose. Many people report a strikingly clear head in weeks 2 to 3. Work that used to require coffee and sugar suddenly flows. For many, this is the real selling point of keto.
5. Fast water-weight loss in week 1
In the first 5 to 10 days you often lose 2 to 9 pounds. Not fat, mostly water. That's fine: carbs hold water, and on keto you shed that first. After that, real fat loss kicks in, around 1 to 2 pounds per week. Fast week-one weight loss is a good sign your system is switching over.
Avo tracks it for you
In the Ketomi app you can log daily energy and symptoms, and Avo spots the pattern. He tells you when you're likely in ketosis, plus what to do if it's taking too long.

Three most common causes:
- Hidden carbs. Sauces, marinated meat, "sugar-free" products with maltitol and similar. Check labels.
- Too much protein. Protein can be converted to glucose via gluconeogenesis. Stick to normal portions, not bodybuilder levels.
- Not long enough. People who ate lots of carbs for years can need 5 to 7 days. Don't panic, keep going.
Do I need a ketone meter?
For most people, no. The five signs above together give a reliable picture. A ketone meter is useful if:
- You're using keto medically (type 2 diabetes, epilepsy, in consultation with a doctor)
- You're a performance athlete who wants precise data
- You're 2 weeks in and feel NOTHING, then a meter helps rule out whether it's really the carbs
Three measurement methods:
- Urine strips (Ketostix): cheap (around 5 USD for 50 strips), good for the first 1 to 2 weeks, less reliable after that.
- Breath meters (Ketonix): 100 to 200 USD one-off, reusable, reasonable accuracy.
- Blood meters (Keto Mojo): most precise, around 80 USD for the meter plus the cost of strips per measurement. Finger prick.
How long until you're in ketosis?
- Day 1-2: your body still uses stored sugar (glycogen). No ketosis yet.
- Day 3-4: glycogen runs out, liver starts making ketones. This is often when keto flu hits.
- Day 5-7: ketosis stabilizes. First signs (energy, less hunger) appear.
- Week 2-3: fully fat-adapted. Body runs efficiently on fat.
How do you stay in ketosis?
Three rules:
- Under 20 to 30 grams of net carbs per day
- Enough fat (most people underestimate this)
- No snacking (gives your liver time to make ketones)
Accidentally ate a handful of chips? No drama. Go back to normal the next day, you'll be back in ketosis within 24 to 48 hours. A full cheat day is a bigger reset and costs you 2 to 4 days to recover.
How Ketomi helps
Avo recognizes from your daily logs (energy, symptoms, weight, meal photos) when you're in ketosis. He warns you if you accidentally go over your carb budget and suggests adjustments. No more guessing.
